Opacum Land Trust Tour of Historic Flynt Quarry in Monson
with James and Mary Gage
October is Massachusetts Archaeology month and the Opacum Land Trust is sponsoring a local walk for this event. Join James and Mary Gage to view the former Flynt Quarry on Margaret Street in Monson at 1pm on Sunday October 28th. The quarry was very active during the 1800’s and produced granite used not only for numerous buildings in Monson, but also in Springfield, Holyoke, Amherst, Boston and on to New York City, Saratoga Springs, NY, and Chicago. High quality Monson granite was used from Maine to Alabama and as far west as Illinois, Iowa and Kansas. The tour will include an introduction to the history of the quarry, a walk along the bottom of the north ridge to explore evidence of quarrying activity, and will proceed to the southeast end of the quarry to examine white granite, star holes, and other features. There is no charge for this event. Meet us at the Quarry located on Margaret Street/Upper Palmer Road about 1/2 mile north of the Monson High School. There is no need to RSVP. Questions?
