| Opacum Land Trust is thrilled to partner with the town of Monson for the permanent protection of 124.9 acres, known as the Reimers Road Conservation Area. The land was purchased by the town and protected by a permanent Conservation Restriction agreement in June of this year. When a property is protected by a Conservation Restriction, a third party has to agree to “hold” and enforce the terms of the agreement. That is where Opacum comes in. Opacum Land Trust has agreed to “hold” the Conservation Restriction and is now responsible for making sure that the forest, wetlands, and streams remain safe as open space, wildlife habitat, and a place for recreation – forever. The Reimers Road Conservation Area features forest, wetlands, and streams and supports habitat connectivity for wildlife and it is less than 1/4-mile from 960 additional acres of protected land in northern Monson. |

| Opacum Land Trust has monitored 1,800 acres of conserved land so far in 2026. To protect the land and the wildlife that call it home, every conserved property has a unique set of rules prohibiting certain activities such as constructing new buildings, removing plants or trees, or using motorized vehicles. Opacum is responsible for regularly monitoring protected land and identifying violations of these rules. If violations are found, Opacum takes steps to address them and to keep the land safe. |

| Opacum Land Trust has hosted 425 people at events so far this year. Our events are designed to educate, entertain, and connect the community to the land and to each other. Some highlights include:Letterboxing challenge – families spent a week exploring local conserved properties and historic sites searching for and collecting hidden stamps Volunteer trail workdays – volunteers helped to clear and maintain 10 miles of trails and construct a new trail at Fay Woods in Monson Educational walks and talks – we have explored local history, flora, fauna, vernal pools, insects, rivers, and more with events for all ages |
